As athletes whose sport depends on a clean, enjoyable environment, sailors are built in stewards of sustainability and environmentally friendly practices.
September, 2018 -- The Transpac 52 fleet is a shining example of this fact, having started a contest for “Greenest Team of the Year”.
The award takes into account each team’s footprint from an ecological standpoint, specifically how much trash does each team generate.
The winners of the award this year go to Team Phoenix who put every piece of their operations under scrutiny to see if it passed the test.
Among the details they assessed were how many disposable plastic water bottles they used, and by implementing a Guzzle H2O system, they were able to get this number down from hundreds or maybe even thousands per regatta to zero.
Other trash busting measures they implemented included:
- Reusable food containers
- Composting all food scraps
- Stainless steel water bottles that last longer than aluminum ones
- Buying in bulk instead of individually wrapped items
- Group flights and carpooling to and from airports
- Eco-friendly cleaning products
- And more and more…!
